Conceptual artist Valerie Lustgarten’s overarching theme is freedom: freedom to be a woman, an artist, a Miamian raised in Venezuela and all the richness that brings into play. Freedom to be vulnerable, creative, artistic, curious, to create, to show, to learn, to explore materials and languages, to reinvent, to express herself, and to think new thoughts.
Lustgarten began exploring gestural painting fifteen years ago, actively researching different media through which to communicate important ideas.
She went from being an educator, to becoming an administrator, and back to education, teaching educators, until finally a wealth of knowledge and experience led her to pursue a career as an artist. As such, she wants to understand how one becomes motivated to communicate an idea no matter how destabilizing it may be.
